New survey shows 2020 Online Census is effective and easy to use

A new survey commissioned by T-Rex Solutions, LLC, found that the online response option of the 2020 Census was the most popular way for respondents to be counted. Of those who filled out the 2020 Census online, an overwhelming 94 percent found it was easy to complete. No respondents reported any significant difficulty using the online census. The survey of likely voters highlights the remarkable success of the nation’s first-ever online collection of census data.

As the Technical Integrator for the 2020 Census, T-Rex Solutions, LLC, is responsible for design, development, maintenance and oversight of the hybrid-multi Cloud computing environments hosting the online response portal as well as overseeing the integration and testing of all components of the Decennial Census.

“The data clearly demonstrates that the first online census is reliable, easy to use and effective for respondents,” said Seth Moore, CEO of T-Rex Solutions. “I’m extremely proud of our work supporting the Census Bureau and their mission. The Census Bureau showed remarkable foresight in leveraging next generation technology to facilitate important cost saving innovations. The success of the Technical Integrator approach in modernizing the IT infrastructure used for the Decennial Count should be a model for other government agencies on how to quickly and efficiently implement IT modernization.”

Eighty-nine percent of those surveyed participated in the census. The majority of those who completed the census online found it easy to use with no issues. Other findings of the survey include:

  • The online form was highly successful in terms of ease of access. Of the 94 percent who found the online component to be easy to complete, 84 percent found the form to be “very easy” to complete. No one reported the form to be “very difficult” to complete.
  • Five percent stated they had minimal issues, but most were within 18-24 years of age and likely first time Census takers.

The Census Bureau is one of the first government agencies to leverage Cloud technologies to host and run mission critical applications. T-Rex Solutions began a relationship with the Census Bureau in 1999 and earned a prime contract in 2016 to complete broad IT Modernization, systems engineering, cybersecurity and integration work for the 2020 count. T-Rex provides technical support across multiple facets of the 2020 Census.

The survey was conducted by Adfero and the Cohen Research Group online with a national sample of 1,000 likely voters and the final data was weighted to the expected November 2020 turnout. This national survey has a margin of sampling error of +3.1 percent at the 95 percent confidence level.
